Archaeological Excavations of the Medieval Settlement of Sarayshyk

From June 10 to July 13, 2025, the Atyrau Regional Museum of History and Local Lore carried out archaeological excavations at the site of the medieval settlement of Sarayshyk.

Over the course of a month, this important scientific project was aimed at uncovering the secrets of the ancient city. On the excavation site, covering an area of 15×15 meters, research was carried out down to the lower part of the cultural layer. The remains of ancient buildings and mausoleums were carefully cleared and subjected to scientific study.

During the excavations, ceramic wares and vessels, water pipes, fragments of chimneys, bone ornaments, as well as coins from the Golden Horde period and other historical and cultural artifacts of the medieval era were discovered. In addition, the remains of household structures, traces of water channels, and brick-laid constructions were revealed. According to the scientific director of the excavations, Candidate of Historical Sciences Marat Kasenov, among the unique finds of this season are a previously unstudied fragment of a large pedestal, gypsum sewage pipes, a fragment of a silver ring with an Arabic inscription, as well as a bone hairpin. Furthermore, a funerary object dating to the 15th–14th centuries was identified and studied; it has an unusual structure, designed in the form of steps and equipped with a chimney.
