Archaeological Research of the Taskeshu Caravanserai
From May 27 to July 17, 2023, archaeological research was carried out at the Taskeshu Caravanserai in the Makat District. The work was led by Senior Researcher M. Kasenov, with the participation of Department Head A. Kalshabayev and Senior Researcher G. Bazarbayev.
During the research, the gates of the caravanserai were fully uncovered, as well as the rooms of the eastern and northern parts of the building (14 rooms, 3 tower-sufas, tandyr ovens, and hearths). The total excavation area amounted to 800 sq. m. In addition, about 30 Golden Horde coins (silver and copper) were discovered on the territory of the caravanserai, including 4 silver coins from the time of Khans Tokhtamysh and Uzbek; fragments of ceramic vessels, bead components, elements of a water-lifting wheel (chigir), as well as standard Golden Horde bricks bearing various imprints. At 1.5 km north of the Taskeshu Caravanserai, in the old riverbed of the Sagyz River, dwellings and settlements from the Golden Horde period were identified, which likely belonged to the inhabitants of the caravanserai. There, 5 silver and several copper coins of Golden Horde khans were found.
