Archaeological Excavations of the Karabau-2 Burial Mound
In June–August, the Atyrau Regional Museum of History and Local Lore carried out archaeological excavations of the Early Iron Age Karabau-2 burial mound, located in the Kyzylkoga District near the village of Karabau. The mound measures 70 m in diameter and 300 cm in height. It is situated 8.5 km northwest of Karabau village in the Kyzylkoga District of Atyrau Region. The scientific director of the excavations was Candidate of Historical Sciences M. Kasenov.
As a result of the excavations at the Karabau-2 mound, about 1,000 artifacts were uncovered. In particular, of the nine burials, seven were found undisturbed. Approximately 100 gold and silver ornaments, items made of precious stones, weapons, as well as ceramic and bone vessels were discovered. The archaeological finds provide evidence of the high level of civilization of the Sarmatian tribes who inhabited the Atyrau region in early periods, including the development of crafts, military art, and religious rituals among the nomads.
