Archaeological Excavations of the Korgansha Settlement
From September to November 2024, the Atyrau Regional Museum of History and Local Lore conducted archaeological excavations at the Korgansha settlement. The Korgansha settlement is located in the Kyzylkoga District of Atyrau Region, 15 km northeast of the village of Karakol and 4 km east of the settlement of Zhanakora. The total area measures 400 × 400 m. Today, the preserved height of the walls is 2 m, with a thickness of 5 m.
Excavations were carried out at Site No. 2, located in the central part of the settlement. During the work, about 100 ceramic fragments and three bronze coins were discovered. Unfortunately, the inscriptions and symbols on the surface of the coins have been completely lost due to natural factors. A trench measuring 5 × 10 m was laid during the excavations, which made it possible to reveal the complete outline of the city’s outer fortress wall. The monument is tentatively dated to the 9th–11th centuries AD. During the fieldwork, samples were collected for soil, archaeobotanical, and archaeozoological studies. All discovered artifacts were transferred to the museum’s collection.
